Welcome to the Physical Education department where we aim to promote a healthy lifestyle that develops pupil physical, mental, social and emotional wellbeing. As a department we strive towards providing pupils with the necessary skills to maintain lifelong physical activity participation.
Core Physical Education – Curriculum for Excellence (Level 3)
This course will cover the Level 3 Curriculum for Excellence Experiences and Outcomes and will build on work covered in the Primary School and S1 respectively.
The course is designed to make best use of the existing P.E. facilities while affording the pupils an opportunity to gain experience in a variety of activities. The activities are as follows:
Core Physical Education – Curriculum for Excellence (Level 4)
This course will cover the Level 4 Curriculum for Excellence Experiences and Outcomes and will build on work covered in S1 and S2 whilst broadening their experiences with some new activities.
Pupils will have a choice in the activity pathway that they choose to follow with a sample of activities as follows:
In S3 Pupils have the option of studying S3 Elective PE and/or S3 NPA SCQF L4 Dance in addition to their 2 periods of Core PE.
In Senior Phase Physical Education, we offer a range of courses including National 3, 4 & 5, Higher and Advanced Higher Physical Education, NPA L4, National 5 and Higher Dance, NPA Achieving Excellence in Sport Level 6 (Football) and a school-based Water Ambassador Course which includes the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) and the Scottish Swimming Teacher Qualification (SSTQ).

At Portobello HS, we use a range of facilities both indoors and outdoors. We encourage pupils to bring a change of kit and appropriate footwear for PE and dress appropriately for classes being delivered outside.
The PE Department delivers an extensive extra-curricular programme to support young people in continuing to explore their interests beyond the classroom.
