S5 – SUMMER READING CHALLENGE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Portobello Library is looking for volunteers in S5 to help out with their Summer Reading Challenge during the summer holidays.  The volunteer positions are flexible and can fit in with holidays and other commitments.  This is a nationally recognised scheme and would be fantastic for college, University and job applications.  Duties may include scheme administration, helping with drop-in activites and events, updating social media and visiting primary schools to launch the challenge.

For more information and to express interest please see Miss Thow (Library) before you go on exam leave

International Science Festival Sci-Ku Competition

CONGRATULATIONS

Ryan Gilhooly, is a winner in the Edinburgh International Science Festival Sci-Ku Competition!  Ryan’s Sci-Ku about space has won him third prize for his poem:

Hammer and feather

Deceives the wielder with touch

Both fall simultaneously

There was over 1,300 science haikus from all over Scotland. The judges from Edinburgh City Libraries, the City of Literature Trust, and climate scientist and poet Rachel McCarthy had a very difficult task in deciding the finalists and prize winners. One of the judges said:

One of the only haiku concerned with experimentation we’ve seen, and presents a complex thought in merely 3 lines”

Also awarded a prize was Alex Mclean. His vivid and imaginative poem was very highly commended by the judges:

Rotating planets

Jewellery of the galaxy

A chain of daisies
