Aims and Philosophy

  • To provide a sound basis of knowledge and skills which, will stimulate, build confidence and sustain interest and enjoyment in Food & Textile Technology.
  • To help young people to develop their understanding of a healthy diet.
  • To develop the knowledge and skills required to enable young people to make reasoned and informed decisions and help to establish lifelong healthy living habits.
  • To help young people develop their knowledge and understanding of safe and hygienic practices.
  • To develop in young people organisational skills and the technological capability necessary to meet the needs of individuals and family members within a rapidly changing society.

S3

S3 is the final year of the Broad General Education during which pupils continue to develop their practical skills and improve their knowledge of the basic principles of chemistry. The course contributes to pupils’ general education by drawing their attention to applications of chemistry in everyday life.

S4

In S4 pupils will build on what they have learned in S3, leading to presentation for National 3, 4 or 5 Qualifications at the end of S4.

Health & Food Technology National 4 / 5

Hospitality National 3 / 4

There is a heavy emphasis on practical food preparation. This course would be especially suitable for students who want to go into catering or take the hospitality Nat 5 course in S5/6. The course is made up of the following units:

  • Organisational skills
  • Value added assessment, practical exam 1.5 hours

S5 / S6

Early Education & Childcare National 4 / 5

The course revolves around the care of children and is especially useful for those interested in nursing, nursery nursing or working with children. The course is suitable for both boys and girls, it is an excellent preparatory course to becoming a parent.

Students can work through separately assessed units to gain credits building up to a course award.

The units studied are:

  • Parenting
  • Child development & health
  • Play in early education & childcare
  • Working in early education & childcare

Hospitality National 5

This is a food technology course built up of units as listed below.

There is a heavy emphasis on practical food preparation. This course would be especially suitable for students who want to go into catering or hospitality or for those who may be intending to take responsibility for their own diet, food preparation and budgeting skills in the near future.

Fashion & Textiles Technology Nat 5

This course allows pupils the opportunity to acquire organisational, technical, creative and aesthetic skills in a practical environment.

There is no entry level but pupils must have an interest in Fashion and Textiles. The course would also be very beneficial for pupils who are following Art & Design as a subject and can be used to incorporate design activities being undertaken for exam purposes.

Practical Cake Craft Nat 5

This course allows pupils the opportunity to acquire technical, creative and aesthetic skills in a practical environment.

The course is fun but full on! The course may interest students with an artistic/creative flair or those who have an entrepreneurial spirit and may wish to start their own business one day. The course units are as follows:

  • Cake Finishing
  • Final course assessment cake

Higher Health & Food Technology

A high emphasis on diet and Nutrition runs throughout the course and study involves specialist knowledge and the development of skills and abilities within this area.

Students who are considering a career in the fields of health, care, medicine and food technology  would find this both beneficial and rewarding.

Minority Interest Classes in S5 / S6

Food Skills

This practical course is perfect for developing future life skills, ideal preparation for College or University living. You will learn the basics and some slightly more adventurous dishes to impress your friends!

There is a nominal weekly charge for this course.

Fabric Skills

Basic textile and fabric craft work with smaller items made in the first term to allow development of sewing skills. Progression in term 2 can lead to garment making.
