A special soulful jazzy cabaret night…
Anyone who attended last year’s cabaret night knows it was a night to remember! Top class acts ranged from Blair Thompson’s Beyoncé interpretation to Mairi Campbell’s own brand of ‘celtic soul’. So you’ll be delighted to hear that our 2012 cabaret night promises the same magical mix of Blair, our crooning copper, PC Sands, and our very best PHS acts including a range of solo artists and the jazz band… all hosted by international singing star, Mairi Campbell.
Reserve a table with friends (or meet new ones there), enjoy a drink from the bar, and settle down for some top class entertainment. There’ll be time to talk and enjoy the atmosphere as well as being wowed (and sometimes surprised) by the acts …
Venue: PHS (transformed into a club style venue for the night with licensed bar)
Date: Saturday 3rd March, 7.30– 10.30pm
Tickets: £10 / £5 concession

How we helped in 2010/11
Rugby: For the last 10 or so years Portobello High school S1 / S2 pupils have played in what can only be described as threadbare and well very worn rugby shirts. This year, with the generous donation made by the parent council for school rugby shirts, not only does the team look fantastic in their new outfit but ever since they have donned them have played brilliantly to beat all comers to date. Many thanks, from the team, to the parent council for transforming the image of the team and as a result contributing to the performance on the field as well.
Home Economics: “Many thanks to the Parent Council for our fantastic ‘virtual baby’ resource, our students are delighted to have 2 working babies now which they can use to take home and simulate a care environment. The babies are used with more than one class and help to support this inspiring course”. Z Sharp PT Home Economics
Biology : The biology department would like to thank the parent council for providing funds for a new microscope for the biology department. This has enabled us to do oil immersion microscopy with the biotechnology group. A quote from an S4 student “It’s really great, getting a chance to use good equipment in school”.
Chemistry ” I would like to thank the Parent Council for the funding to enable me to equip all 4 chemistry labs with Molecular Model Kits.
These kits are invaluable when we are teaching pupils about the structures of molecules eg hydrocarbons, which are 3 dimensional and often difficult to “picture” in the mind. The kits allow pupils to build models of these molecules and to see their real shape in space which enhances their 3 dimensional appreciation of molecular shape”.
Bill Miller PT Chemistry
Art and Design: “The contributions made by the parent council have provided us with a fantastic resource and a very generous addition to our department. The cameras are invaluable and are used by senior and junior pupils alike to record and promote their design ideas, as well as to produce creative photographic outcomes. We also plan to use the cameras to aid animation in the next coming weeks, which is exciting both for us and the pupils. We always hope to offer youngsters the best opportunities and access to a broad and varied range of materials and experiences. Your funding has enhanced this and opened up possibilities simply not possible otherwise. On behalf of the pupils and staff at Portobello, I’d like to thank you for enriching the creative opportunities we can offer.”
Sharon Gallagher –Art and Design
PE: “The PE Department would like to thank the Parent Council for their generosityThe Coomber has been a fantastic piece of equipment to have in the PE Department. It has been extensively used this year in our Dance classes and in particular the Scottish Country Dance we have done with our S1 and S2 pupils. It is a very sturdy and powerful machine which is perfect for everyday use and projecting loud music across our games hall.” Emma Houghton PT Physical Education
CDT: “On behalf of the Craft, Design & Technology Department in Portobello High School I would like to express our gratitude for the donation received from the Parent Council for our new Engineering Club. Pupils will get the chance to design a car, using 3D parametric modelling software, the pupils will make the cars, test them and race them both locally and nationally”. Caroline Byrne
