Supporting Your Learner

This section of the school website is designed to give information and to support you in helping your learner consolidate knowledge and build upon skills that they are being taught at Portobello High School. It will provide you with subject specific advice and handy tips that will equip you with the tools and knowledge needed to effectively support your learner throughout their school career.

The main purpose of this section is to enable parents and carers to feel comfortable and confident in supporting your learner at home with their schoolwork. It aims to provide helpful links and advice on SQA exam arrangements and be easy to navigate and quick to access. If parents and carers are confident at home in supporting their learners, then learners will be more confident at school. Click on the links to the left to find out more.

Beyond the Exam

The Scottish Qualifications Authority has produced a short film, Beyond the Exam, which highlights how key parts of the qualifications system work. It is intended to give candidates and their families a clearer insight into the journey of an exam paper, from its creation through to results day.

The film also introduces the new Results Services and explains what happens when candidates are unable to sit an exam or assessment as a result of an illness or if they have not received the mark they expected.

The film was made for SQA by students at City of Glasgow College, as part of their Higher National qualification.

The film can be viewed on the SQA YouTube channel.

National Parent Forum’s Revision in a Nutshell guides for the new Highers

Below are the links to the National Parent Forum’s Revision in a Nutshell guides for the new Highers (20 subjects) and updated Revision guides for National 5s (20 subjects).

Tina Woolnough, the Edinburgh representative on the National Parent Forum of Scotland and co-creator of the Curriculum for Excellence in a Nutshell guides for parents, has asked us to highlight the new Nutshell guides.  The original ones were well received two years ago when the nationals were first being introduced and we hope you will find these equally helpful.

The revision guides contain direct links to SQA specimen question papers, exemplar question papers plus past question papers, where appropriate.  They are designed as digital resources and work well on IPads or other tablets.

The guides advise learners to check with their teachers to make sure that material is relevant.  They are primarily intended to provide the SQA direct links by subject in one place, and to give some additional revision opportunities (if relevant) including web-links to school pages or to the websites of subject-relevant organisations.
