To Parents / Carers of P7 Pupils of the Portobello Cluster Group Primaries
OPEN EVENING AT PORTOBELLO HIGH SCHOOL
THURSDAY, 17th SEPTEMBER 2015 (6:30 – 8:50 p.m)
It may seem very early in the new session to be thinking about the Transition programme for 2015 / 2016. Nevertheless, we feel that it is important to make this contact with our prospective parents / carers and pupils before schooling decisions have to be taken by you. My colleagues and I would like to extend a warm invitation to you and to your daughter / son to an Open Evening in the High School on the evening of Thursday, 17th September 2015, starting at 6:30 p.m. in the School Hall.
Our evening will start with a short musical performance from some of our pupils, followed by a short introductory session which will describe the liaison programme that we have developed with our associated primaries. There will also be an opportunity for you to visit a selection of our departments and see some of our pupils at work with their teachers. You should receive a copy of our School Handbook in December which will be issued through the Primary Schools. The school now has its own website which can be accessed at http://portobellohighschool.org.uk. This site contains a lot of information about the school and is updated regularly.
Another meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, 8th June 2015, when we will take a more detailed look at what Portobello High School has to offer to you and your daughter / son. Prior to that meeting, staff from the High School will visit the primaries to talk to the Primary 7 classes. In addition there will be regular contact with the staff of our associated Primary Schools.
If you would like to visit the school during the working day, then I would encourage you to contact Mr K Walker here at the school, so that a mutually convenient time can be arranged.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if there are any questions that you would like answered concerning the school. I look forward to meeting you on 17th September 2015.

On Friday the 14th of August staff at Portobello High School worked together looking at our ethos, culture and values. Staff working in groups debated and discussed what happens in a school where it is nurturing, encouraging, there is mutual respect and sense of belonging.
Please see attachment for further information.

For the past 3 years, PHS has contributed to Keep Scotland Beautiful’s Clean Up Scotland initiative in collaboration with volunteers from the Seafield and Princes St McDonald’s restaurants. The initiative involves a litter pick, cleaning up Figgate Burn and tidying the garden in our local Figgate Park, with valuable support from the council ranger service and local councillors.
This year, the intiative, and the other work these McDonald’s restaurants do in Edinburgh, were rewarded with runner up in the ‘Love Where You Live’ award, introduced to recognise employees’ work towards Keep Britain Tidy’s Love Where You Live campaign. They beat over 1,200 other finalists from across the UK to the position – this photo shows crew member Katelyn Scott receiving the award.
The Figgate Park Clean Up involves S2 pupils and takes place in May – well done to those involved!
We have an ongoing issue with our external telephone lines at the present moment.
Apologies for any inconvenience this is causing.
The Engineers have been called out to repair.
The staff at Portobello High School are looking forward to welcoming back our pupils after the summer break. We hope you have had an enjoyable holiday and are feeling refreshed and relaxed for the start of the new term. On Monday the 17th of August all pupils from S2 – S6 should report to their Key Adult Group at 8.30am, as new timetables will be issued.
