Welcome to Portobello High School’s website. We are pleased to provide those visiting our site with information about the school and aspects of our work. Good communication is important to us as a school and we regard our relationship with parents/carers and the wider community as crucial to the success of the school.

Here at Portobello High School we are committed to providing a challenging and rewarding educational experience.  We are a non-denominational, six year comprehensive based in the East of Edinburgh.  Our school roll is over 1300 pupils and despite being the largest school in Edinburgh, the House System we operate and our policies and procedures ensure that every pupil is welcome, known and supported.

We pride ourselves in being an inclusive school which offers many and varied opportunities, both within and outwith the classroom, for the growth and development of pupils in our care.

Scottish Schools Cross Country Championships

Could any pupil wishing to enter the Scottish Schools Cross Country Championships in Irvine on 9th March 2016 please see Paddy Dearlove in PE on Thursday lunchtime.

The Sick Kids Foundation

ALL PUPILS

On Friday 26th February, at morning break, senior pupils will be organising an event to raise money for The Sick Kids Foundation.

You are invited to come to school wearing something BRIGHT eg, a head band, t-shirt etc. There will be a stall in the foyer at break selling sweets and pupils will come round classes collecting donations for their charity. Remember to bring in a pound!

Congratulations to:

Daniel Torbett-Schofield and Kieran Brown who beat off hot competition to win the instrumental and vocal prizes in the first round of the Portobello Rotary Club Young Musician of the Year competition. They now go forward to the Semi-final at Heriot watt University (Riccarton) on Wednesday, 10th February.  Supporters are welcome; the competition starts at 7 p.m.

Jen Cassidy in S4 who successfully auditioned for Scottish Opera in Glasgow and has been offered a place on their Gateway Course which runs for a week in July.  Jen will work with a range of professionals including composers, conductors, directors, designers, choreographers and singers.

ALL PUPILS

Do you want to win a £30 I tunes or Amazon voucher?  To do so you will need to enter a competition to design the “Welcome Wall” in the new school.  To hear more about this come to a meeting in the assembly hall at morning break on Wednesday, 10 February 2016.

The welcome wall is in the main entrance of the new school and the winning design will be enlarged to sit in this area.

If you are not able to attend this meeting please see you Art teacher before the February break.

 

A brand-new park in EH15

Three proposed plans for Edinburgh’s newest park are now being consulted on and YOU CAN HELP choose the final ‘park design’ and the name for the new park.

The shortlisted names are:

  1. St John’s – a name to link the new park to the primary school next door
  2. Treverlen – the original name for Duddingston, meaning “settlement by the lake of reeds”.

The Neighbourhood Partnership will make the final choice at its meeting on Thursday 17 March, at 6pm, in Parsons Green Primary School. Everyone is welcome to come to the meeting, but you will be able to let us know which design you like best before that.

Help us choose

Please, have a look at the plans and tell us which design and park name you like best. The three ‘draft park plans’ will be displayed during the whole of February 2016, to give folk a chance to identify their favourite design. You can see the plans during February at:

  • Piershill Library
  • Craigmillar Library
  • Portobello Library
  • Northfield and Craigentinny Community Centres
  • the HUB – Restalrig

This is the last stage of the local engagement. Help identify what bits included in the plans that YOU prefer. This will help the Partnership choose the best design, and the park name in March. The design chosen will then be sent to Children and Families for delivery in 2018, as part of the new Portobello High School and St John’s Primary School project.

Between summer and end October 2015, people gave us their ideas and told us what they wanted to see in the new park. Over 2,500 local people of all ages had their say at events, meetings, or using the on-line survey. Edinburgh & Lothians Greenspace Trust (ELGT) lead the engagement. Based on analysis of all the ideas gathered, three draft designs have been developed. The three draft proposals were first presented to the Neighbourhood Partnership on 19 January 2016.
