Message from Ruth McKay, Head Teacher

I am delighted to introduce myself to you as the new Head Teacher of Portobello High School.

Previously, I have taught in a number of schools in both rural and urban settings and have also worked at both national and local authority level in education. Most recently, I was Head Teacher of Kelso High School in the Scottish Borders and prior to that I was a Depute Head Teacher in Dunbar Grammar School in East Lothian.

Since my appointment to Portobello High School in September, I have visited the school a number of times and have also had the opportunity to attend a meeting of the Parent Council. As I approach the end of my first week in post, I have confirmed my initial impressions of the school as a diverse and vibrant community with many strengths.  I have been impressed both by the commitment and professionalism of our staff and the confident, friendly manner of our young people.

With our new building now taking shape rapidly, it is an especially exciting time to lead the school. I extend my thanks to all those who have made me feel so welcome and look forward to working with you in order to ensure the best outcomes for all our learners.

Ruth McKay, Head Teacher
