Portobello High School, Edinburgh Leisure and Active Schools worked together to provide the opportunity for 11 senior pupils to complete a free Level 1 swim teaching award during the February school holiday.
They were thrown in at the deep end with 35 primary school children attending free swim lessons twice a day for the duration of the course.
Louise Findlay who was leading the Level 1 qualification said “The Portobello High School pupils who completed the UKCC Level 1 course were a joy to work with. They engaged very well with the children who attended the ‘learn to swim’ scheme and helped them to develop their water confidence, skills and strokes. They have all been offered volunteering work which will enable them to consolidate the skills they have learnt on the course”.
Not only have the senior pupils benefited from this project but at least 80 children from Duddingston, Brunstane, Towerbank, Royal High and Parsons Green primaries learned to swim or developed their strokes during the week.
One parent said “I really appreciate the time and effort your staff put into the kids swimming. My daughter is now very confident in the water and is hoping to do more swimming in the Easter holidays”.
