  • Physical needs of individuals and families – different dietary needs, financial needs, accommodation   needs, product design needs
  • Budgeting and money management – consumer rights, protection acts, ways of saving/budgeting

 

Access3/Int1 Hospitality

  • Food Preparation Techniques for the Hospitality Industry:
  • Learning skills in knife work, decoration, garnishing and pastry
  •  Cookery Processes: An Introduction:
  • Learning skills in baking, poaching, grilling, frying, steaming, stir frying, roasting and boiling
  • Food Hygiene for the Hospitality Industry:
  • Covering food safety, personal hygiene, kitchen design, preventing food poisoning
  • Hospitality Organisation of Practical Skills:
  • Planning your work, choosing your own recipes and producing them to a high standard.
  • You will also achieve 2 additional qualifications, which are extremely useful if you want to work part time in the food industry.

S5/6
Int1 Lifestyle & Consumer Technology (Child Studies)
The course revolves around the care of children and is especially useful for those interested in nursing, nursery nursing or working with children.  The course is suitable for both boys and girls, it is an excellent preparatory course to becoming a parent.
Students can work through separately assessed units to gain credits building up to a course award.
The units studied are:

  • Organisation of practical skills
  • Food prep for healthy eating
  • Pre-school child, food, clothing & play
  • Preparation for parenthood
  • Health & Safety for babies/children

 

Int1 Health & Food Technology (Food Studies)
This is a food technology course with a heavy emphasis on practical food preparation.  This course would be especially suitable for students who want to go into catering or hospitality or for those who may be intending to take responsibility for their own diet, food preparation and budgeting skills in the near future.
The units studied are:

  • Food for health
  • Food product development
  • Food technology

 

Int1 Fashion & Textile Technology
This course allows pupils the opportunity to acquire organisational, technical, creative and aesthetic skills in a practical environment. There is no entry level but pupils must have an interest in Fashion and Textiles.  The course would also be very beneficial for pupils who are following Art & Design as a subject and can be used to incorporate design activities being undertaken for exam purposes.

  • Developing Craft Skills in Textiles
  • Organisation of Practical Skills

 

Higher Lifestyle & Consumer Technology
A high emphasis on diet and nutrition runs throughout the course and study involves specialist knowledge and the development of skills and abilities within this area.
Students who are considering a career in the fields of health, care, medicine, food technology or consumer law would find this both beneficial and rewarding.
The units studied are:

  • Resources management
  • Consumer Studies
  • Technological Project

 

Minority Interest Classes in S5/6
Food Skills
This practical course is perfect for developing future life skills, ideal preparation for College or University living.  You will learn the basics and some slightly more adventurous dishes to impress your friends! There is a nominal weekly charge for this course.

 

Fabric Skills
Basic textile and fabric craft work with smaller items made in the first term to allow development of sewing skills.  Progression in term 2 can lead to garment making.
